Review: XU Dubai
XU's sexy and fun brand of high-end Cantonese cuisine is audacious and a bit pricey, but with burly, broad-chested ducks.

XU exudes playful pleasure. It lures in beautiful people and those who enjoy that orbit. It’s not only for the young, a fact I notice more now that I am in my 40s. Here a mixed crowd mingles. Corporate types shed of suits. Ladies, some in their 20s, some in their 40s, both nattering about the weekend ahead. A smattering of couples who appear to be on special date nights pepper the space near the open-plan kitchen. The gong-armed DJ punches it up a few decibels, and I ask myself, dragging another parcel of tenderloin through this iridescent sauce, do people actually get up to dance?
3 things you should know about XU Dubai:
It’s an all rounder. Some restaurants you go to for that one things, but XU ticks several boxes and is another place for people looking for good food, a lively atmosphere, high-octane decor and booze.
… but it leans more bar scene in my view. You could come here for drinks and meet ups with friends and have just as good a night without ordering plate after plate.
The main courses were directionally stronger dishes which, from a price perspective, means the bill can get punchy quickly. BUT, the desserts really stood out, which is unusual in my experience for Cantonese restaurants.
